TO MAXIMISE OPPORTUNITIES FOR BLIND AND VISION IMPAIRED PERSONS TO ENJOY SAILING AS A SPORT OR RECREATION
Sailing, a sport and recreation opportunity
Sailing has proven to be a fantastic sport and recreational activity for blind and vision impaired persons.
Whether its aboard a crewed keelboat or solo in a centerboarder, the blind sailor becomes familiar with the confined and constant working environment on board a yacht and is able to enjoy performing many of the tasks of sailing and maintenance.
Add to this the highly sensory non-visual feedback of sound, motion, heel, tension, pressure and the feel of wind and spray, all of which we learn to interpret. All in all a fulfilling experience of freedom and control.
Provided there is someone or something providing visual, tactical and safety outside the boat, we can enjoy all the usual pleasures of sailing. For anyone struggling with their loss of sight there is a huge liberating reward of achievement and capability, and when night sailing we have a distinct advantage!
